Introduction

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital offers informal training in surgical techniques and in care of vesico/rectal vaginal fistula (VVF/RVF) patients to qualified obstetrician/gynecologists and surgeons who are actively involved in treating women with this condition. The training is offered for one calendar month (four weeks) from the 1st day of the month until the 30th day of the month.

Objectives

By the end of the one-month training at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, the trainee will be able:

  • To know the need for better obstetric care
  • To diagnose a urinary and/or recto-vaginal fistula.
  • To know the pathogenesis of obstetric fistulae
  • To differentiate the different forms of urinary incontinence
  • To operate surgically with an efficient outcome, a small vesico-vaginal fistula
  • To teach his/her nursing staff how to manage and care for the pre-operative and post-operative fistula patient
  • To give health education to post-operative patients, including the warning related to further pregnancies and where to deliver
  • To provide supportive psychological care at all times to any patient with childbirth or related injuries.

Criteria

As places are limited our policy is to restrict training for experienced obstetricians gynecologists or surgeons who are actively involved in treating VVF / RVF patients in the developing world where this condition is prevalent. We give preference to those who give treatment free or at low cost.

This must be booked in advance as it is not always available. The cost is US$25 per day which is payable in advance on arrival. Should you leave earlier than foreseen, the over-payment will be reimbursed.
The hospital site has wireless access to the internet for those with laptops. For those with no laptop there is an internet café a short walk from the hospital. Other hospital facilities such as telephone and fax are for emergency use only.
If on-site accommodation is unavailable there are a number of local hotels. Rates can be supplied on request.
