Hamlin Fistula Welfare and Research Trust
The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital is registered at the High Court of Ethiopia as a Charity. The Trust was founded in August 1974. The Board comprises four members and the founder as required by Ethiopian Law.
The members are:
- Dr. E. Catherine Hamlin – Founder
- Ato Tekalign Gedamu – Chairman
- Mr Richard Hamlin- Trustee
- Dr Tim Teusink – Trustee
- Mr. Richard Nerurkar – Trustee
- Dr. Jember Teferra – Alternate Trustee
- Ato Nardos Lemma- Legal Advisor
- Ato Amsalu- Secretary
The Board meets six to eight times a year and deliberates on matters of policy and mission, guiding the overall use of the resources of the organisation. The CEO reports directly to the members of the Trust.
Management Committee
The Management Committee is made up of senior members of staff who report to the CEO (with the exception of the Founder who also joins this group). The committee meets weekly to discuss issues of hospital management. Those reporting to the CEO are responsible for all activities of the organisation including the Midwifery College, Desta Mender and the 5 regional Fistula treatment centers in Ethiopia.

- Dr. E. Catherine Hamlin – Founder
An obstetrician/gynaecologist fistula surgeon extraordinaire, now in her eighties, is most often seen with her patients ensuring that they receive the best care possible.
- Mr. Mark Bennett – Chief Executive Officer
An Australian who came to us from Egypt where he worked for ten years first as a Program Coordinator for refugees and then as Diocesan Development Officer for the Episcopal Church in Egypt.
- Professor Gordon Williams- Medical Director
Professor Williams has been a friend of the Hospital for more than 20 years assisting with Urological surgery on a voluntary basis. He is a highly awarded surgeon from the UK and most recently has been responsible for Surgical Training in the National Health System in the UK. He came to Ethiopia as the Dean of a newly formed Medical Colleage but has recently offered his services to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hosptial.
- Ato Abebe Gesit – Administrator
Manages the personnel function and the other administrative activities of the hospital. He formerly worked in the Planning Department of the Ministry of Health.
- Ato Asfaw Negussie - Financial Services Manager
Has recently joined the organisation to assisting in financial planning, budgetting and resource Management.
- W/o Genet Kifle – Accounting Manager
Comes with a banking background and joined the hospital at the request of Dr. Reginald Hamlin. She leads a small efficient team.
- Sr. Ejigayehu Wolde – Matron
Supervises the pre- and post-operative care, assisted by experienced senior nurses and nurse-aides (many of them former patients).
- Ato Ephrem Aklilu- Desta Mender site Manager Ephrem is a qualified ariculturist and has worked in training rural farmers to better manage their resources and plan their production.
- Sr Annette Bennett- Dean of the School of Midwifery
Annette comes to the Fistula Hospital as a qualified Nurse Midwife with many years of experience in refugee maternal health. The Hamlin College of Midwives is a recent initiative and has been started from scratch with the team working with Annette as the Hospitals key prevention strategy.
Medical Advisory Board
This board is a new inititive set up to assist the Board of Trustees to ensure that the Medical services are of the highest possible standard. The Board reviews Medical Audit, Staff Professional Development, Medical Standards and policies/ protocols.
The Board is made up of senior members of the Medical staff (ie the Medical Director, one senior Doctor, Matron, a member of the Board of Trustees- Dr Tim Tuesink and two outside senior medical pofessionals). The CEO may join meetings of the Medical Advisory Board. The Board functions to advise the CEO and the Board of Trustees in clinical issues and to promote excellence.
